Scopus Refine Results redesign

Published 2012/06/05

In close collaboration with my User Centered Design (UCD) team, we redesigned the Refine Results interface for Scopus.  The most significant change was from a horizontal to a vertical format. To determine if this was the best course of action, we created mockups and tested which format users and customers prefer. One interesting finding was that, because refine was above the results, some users felt they were required to refine before actually checking to see if the results were right.  Users also felt they should try to use as many refinement categories as possible because they were all equally prominent.

Our UCD group then developed a semi-functional prototype to usability test possible solutions. The general goal was to continue to support the needs of advanced users, while making it easier for more novice users. Usage of the implemented solution demonstrates that users are now refining more selectively and using different categories more wisely.

Added as part of this project was the ability to export refine values for analysis, which was also the first stage of the Analyze Results project.

The below tutorial outlines the implemented solution. return to Portfolio
